Looking for a Justice of the Peace (JP)
in Thailand?
NYC Legal & Notary Services Co., Ltd. is your definitive legal partner in the Kingdom of Thailand. Managed by NYC+ Language School, we serve the international community by providing authorized document witnessing and authentication.
Many expatriates from Commonwealth countries (Australia, UK, New Zealand) search for a "Justice of the Peace" (JP) in Bangkok to witness statutory declarations or certify true copies. However, Thailand operates under Civil Law, not Common Law, and does not have the office of Justice of the Peace. Instead, the Notarial Services Attorney is the authorized legal professional empowered by the Lawyers Council of Thailand to perform these functions. We bridge this legal gap with "Royal Trust" precision, ensuring your documents are accepted back home.
Authorized by The Lawyers Council of Thailand
While we are not JPs (as they don't exist here), we hold the equivalent Thai legal authority required for international document acceptance.
Reg. No. 0435567000061. Officially registered Juristic Person in Thailand.
The Thai equivalent authority for witnessing signatures and certifying documents.
Expert in cross-jurisdiction document validity (Common Law vs Civil Law).
Expert in Visa & Consular affairs for expats in Thailand.
Deep Dive: Justice of the Peace vs. Thai Notarial Attorney
The most common question we receive from Australian and UK clients is: "Where can I find a JP in Bangkok?" The short answer is: You can't. Here is why, and what you should use instead.
The Legal Distinction
Justice of the Peace (JP): A role found in Common Law jurisdictions (UK, Australia, NZ, Canada). JPs are often laypeople or volunteers authorised to witness documents like Statutory Declarations or Affidavits.
Notarial Services Attorney (Thailand): Thailand uses a Civil Law system. We do not have JPs. Instead, the Lawyers Council of Thailand trains and licenses specific lawyers to act as "Notarial Services Attorneys." These attorneys have the legal power to witness signatures, certify true copies, and administer oaths, just like a JP would back home.
Will my document be accepted? In 99% of cases, yes. Most international bodies (like Australian banks, UK land registries) accept a Thai Notarial Services Attorney's seal in lieu of a JP when you are overseas. However, for some government documents, you may need an additional step called "Legalization" at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Our Service Encyclopedia
Notary Public & Witnessing
Since you cannot find a JP, our licensed attorneys provide the equivalent service for your international needs:
- Statutory Declarations: We witness your signature on Commonwealth forms.
- Certified True Copy: We certify copies of Passports, Degrees, and Bank Statements.
- Affidavit of Single Status: For expats wishing to marry in Thailand or abroad.
MFA Legalization & Authentication
If the receiving authority (e.g., a strict government body in your home country) insists on "Consular Verification," we handle the full chain:
- Step 1: Our Attorney signs your document.
- Step 2: We take it to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to legalize our attorney's signature.
- Step 3: We take it to your Embassy (if required) for final authentication.
Certified Translation & NAATI
For Australians, NAATI is the gold standard. We facilitate NAATI translations which are often required alongside JP-like witnessing.
- NAATI Certified: Accepted by the Department of Home Affairs (Australia).
- Official Translation: Thai to English translation of Marriage Certificates, Birth Certificates, etc.
Police Clearance Certificate (CID)
Expats leaving Thailand often need a Thai Police Clearance for their next visa or job. We manage the entire application at the Royal Thai Police HQ.

Case Studies
Case #1: The Australian Pension Form
The Panic: An Australian retiree in Chiang Mai needed to sign a "Life Certificate" for Centrelink. The form said "Witnessed by a Justice of the Peace."
The Obstacle: No JPs in Thailand. The Australian Embassy appointment was 3 weeks away.
Our Solution: NYC's Senior Notarial Attorney witnessed the signature and attached a formal statement of authority. We also provided a copy of the lawyer's license.
The Outcome: Accepted by Centrelink Australia without issue.
Case #2: UK Property Transfer
The Panic: A British expat selling a home in Manchester needed a TR1 form witnessed. The UK solicitor insisted on a "Notary Public."
The Obstacle: The client was confused if a Thai lawyer counts as a Notary.
Our Solution: We clarified that a "Thai Notarial Services Attorney" is the recognized equivalent. We executed the document with a red ribbon seal.
The Outcome: The UK Land Registry accepted the document, and the sale proceeded.
Case #3: New Zealand Statutory Declaration
The Panic: A client needed to declare income for a NZ court case via a Statutory Declaration.
The Solution: We administered the oath in our Bangkok office and signed as the authorized witness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why are there no JPs in Thailand?
A: Thailand follows the Civil Law system (codified law), whereas JPs are a feature of the Common Law system (case law). The roles are structurally different. In Thailand, the Notarial Services Attorney performs the verification functions.
Q: Does the Australian Embassy provide JP services?
A: The Australian Embassy in Bangkok can perform "Notarial Acts" which are similar to what a JP does, but they charge significant fees (often higher than local lawyers) and require advance booking. We offer a faster, often more cost-effective alternative.
Q: Can I use a regular Thai lawyer?
A: No. You must use a lawyer specifically licensed as a "Notarial Services Attorney" by the Lawyers Council of Thailand. Regular lawyers cannot attach the special seal required for international use.
