APEC Business Travel Card — frequently asked questions (12)

Eligibility, supporting documents, how each economy pre-clears an applicant, card validity and passport changes, and what the card does not allow. Fees and processing times change frequently and are left to the issuing authority.

Sources: Department of Consular Affairs, MFA Thailand (consular.mfa.go.th) and the APEC Business Mobility Group (apec.org). Rules may change — confirm with the authority before applying.

🪪 What the ABTC is and where it works (4)

Q1. What is the APEC Business Travel Card?

The ABTC is a travel document for business people across the 21 APEC member economies. It supports short business trips and gives access to the dedicated APEC Lane at immigration in participating economies. For Thai passport holders, applications are handled by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Q2. Does one card cover every economy?

No. Entry benefits apply only to the economies that have pre-cleared you, and those are printed on the back of the card. Each economy decides independently and approvals can arrive at different times.

Q3. Which economies are transitional members?

Canada and United States participate as transitional members. Cardholders still need the visa or electronic travel authorisation that economy requires, although the APEC Lane may still be available at the border.

Q4. How long can I stay per visit?

It varies by economy, commonly in the region of 59 to 90 days per entry. Per-economy figures are shown on each economy page. The immigration officer at the border makes the actual admission decision each time.

📝 Eligibility, documents and processing (4)

Q1. Who can apply?

Broadly, business people with a genuine need for frequent business travel in the APEC region who meet the criteria published by the Department of Consular Affairs, including character requirements and proof of business standing. Check the current published criteria before filing.

Q2. What documents are usually required?

Commonly the application form, a passport with sufficient validity, corporate registration or proof of business standing, a company letter, and the character evidence the authority specifies. The definitive list is the one published by the Department of Consular Affairs on the day you file.

Q3. How long does it take?

There are two layers: the Thai authority processes the application, and each economy runs its own pre-clearance. Total time therefore depends on how many economies you request and their individual queues, so no fixed figure can be given. Ask the Department of Consular Affairs for current timelines.

Q4. What are the fees?

Government fees are set by the authority and can change, so we do not publish figures here. Ask our team by phone, LINE or email for scope and fees.

✈️ Using, renewing and the limits of the card (4)

Q1. How long is the card valid and how is it renewed?

An ABTC is generally valid for up to about 5 years, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you change passports mid-term, follow the procedure set by the Department of Consular Affairs so the card matches your current passport.

Q2. Can I work in the destination economy with an ABTC?

No. The card is for short business visits such as meetings, negotiations and site visits. Paid employment requires the appropriate visa and work authorisation under that economy's law.

Q3. What if one economy refuses pre-clearance?

The card still works for the economies that approved you; the refusing economy simply does not appear on the back, and you would apply for an ordinary visa to travel there.

Q4. What are the sources for this page?

Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consular.mfa.go.th) and APEC Business Mobility Group materials (apec.org). Conditions change — reconfirm with the authority before acting.
